Entertainment Weekly, 1 April 2016
The world, and also South Africans, can start counting down 16 more sleeps until the start of Season 6 of Game of Thrones! Set your alarm for 3am on 25 April 2016 (M-Net Edge, channel 102), where we can watch this epic series simultaneously with the rest of fans! It also seems as if the Dames of Game of Thrones are front and centre this season, and Entertainment Weekly is celebrating it by featuring six strong female leads from Season 6, on a six-way split-cover. Novum, April 2016
What Novum has done with the most recent issue is something that gives me goosebumps and makes me extremely excited about the printed form of magazine! Thirteen thousand covers were printed, but then artist Felix Scheinberger hand-painted each of them differently. 100% unique. I promise, it’s not an April Fool’s joke! See the video here for yourself:
Amazing, right!? Also amazing is its “Deformable cover” done previously. Make sure you read more about that here, as well as watch the video, to have your mind blown…!
Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, 1 April 2016
The trend of hand-making a cover (remember those chocolate and wood covers I’ve featured previously?) continues, and I’m so happy about it! The cover translates to “Game, Set & Winner”, with Stefanie Graf talking about “the myth”. So the team went the extra mile (on a dirt road) to conceptualise and produce this winner! And that’s no myth…
Make sure you watch the fascinating behind-the-scenes video:
The New Yorker, 11 April 2016
The art work featured is called “Take the L Train” by artist Tomer Hanuka, but it seems as if the cover story is about superbeards. To me, though, the cover artwork illustrates a lot more, and has a lot more depth than what is given credit for.
MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
