The Times will cease print edition
Tiso Blackstar Group has confirmed that it has announced to staff “that it is considering the closure of the print edition of its daily newspaper The Times, to replace it with a digital-only daily premium product.” The Times launched in 2007.
In a statement released by managing director, Andy Gill, he says that “despite several changes which have been introduced to the business over the past few years, the print product has remained unprofitable. Tiso Blackstar is proposing the introduction of a premium, digital-only daily edition in a new format, which draws on successful models that have been implemented internationally.”
The move necessitates restructuring and possible retrenchments. Tiso Blackstar has started engaging with staff in a consultation process in terms of Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act.
“At this stage we are not in a position to make further comment until the consultation process has progressed,” he concludes.
