Various Muhammad Ali covers, celebrating his life

The death of professional boxer (and legend!) Muhammad Ali on 3 June 2016 has hit not only the US very hard but the world, too. Various magazines have been featuring him on their covers, celebrating his life and success. For Sports Illustrated, it is exactly the 40th time that Ali has graced its cover. And the ESPN cover and issue, out from today, with the main cover line “I shook up the World”, is my favourite out of all them. Read more about this issue, and how he is being celebrated, here; you may also see some other cover ideas, that didn’t make the cut in the end, here.

Financial Mail (South Africa), 16 June 2016

Financial Mail recently announced that its redesigning and relaunching the magazine “over the next few months” and, to spice things up already, it’s running two covers (something it’s never done before). The cover profile is on Julius Malema, as the magazine got a great scoop to spend time with him on his campaign trail. Read more about this issue, and also see some of the other cover concepts left on the cutting floor, here.

Fortune, 15 June 2016

To celebrate the giant which is Procter & Gamble, which owns the massive Crest Toothpaste brand, Fortune conceptualised this fresh idea! Brilliant! Page through the issue here.

Good Housekeeping (US), July 2016

Good Housekeeping (US), July 2016

A fresh, zesty and clever citrus-cover from the Good Housekeeping US team.

Windsurf, July 2016

Windsurf, July 2016

I don’t know too much about windsurfing as a sport (other than seeing dozens of these fanatics along the Blouberg coast…) but what an amazing shot and final cover!

MediaSlutMagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The anonymous (for now) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
